Biological Psychology Essay
Abstract Psychology has its own biological boundaries. This is in the form of biological psychology or behavioral neuroscience. The main aim of this branch in psychology is to have a clearer picture of the relationship of the mind and body, and mind and brain. It tries to link the brain functions to the different mental processes and behaviors. This type of psychology investigates man’s physiological phenomena such as memory and emotions. Biological Psychology Human beings are more then a collection of systems, more than a collection of organs and more than a collection of cells. The human body is complex. It is an operating organism which functions as a whole. The human body involves a great deal of variety of processes. By examining the parts, it does not mean that one can understand the whole organism (Arnold, 1999). Biological psychology is the field of psychology which main endeavor was to link the different brain functions to different mental processes and behaviors. Psychologists in this subdiscipline of psychology are often interested in relating biological variables to psychological or behavioral variables. It deals with biological processes and behaviors that are shared with mammalian animals. This is because biological psychologists utilize animals in their experiments. Some of these processes are sensation, perception, motivation, learning memory and control of motor movements (â€Å"Biological Psychology†).            The history of Biological psychology emerged from various philosophical views in the 18th and 19th century. However, its study started much earlier. It dates back to Avicenna, a Persian psychologist and physician. He recognized physiological psychology in the treatment of illnesses involving emotions. Avicenna also gave some psychological explanations on somatic illnesses. He believed that humidity inside the brain can cause mood disorders. Humidity is brought by the change with the amount of breath. Another is that happiness increases the breath so it contributes to the brain’s moisture. But then, too much moisture can make the brain loss control thus having mental disorders (â€Å"The Mind-Brain Problem†).            The philosophical history of Biological Psychology surfaced from philosophers like Rene Descartes. He believed that the pineal gland was the point of contact between the mind and body. He also proposed a theory that pneumatics or fluid power of bodily fluids is connected to reflexes and motor behavior (â€Å"The Mind- Brain Problem†).            Another philosopher who contributed to Biological psychology is William James.  He is the one who argued that in the study of psychology there should also be consideration to the understanding of Biology. He also stressed that the functions of the brain must be included in the study of psychology. The connection between mind and brain became progressively clearer in the nineteenth century. In this century, the doctors started observing patients who suffered from head injuries. The patients usually exhibited alterations in language and memory and some variation in their personalities. One patient is a refined businessman and a loving father became a vulgar person who lacks in affection for his loved ones after a sever blow in the head. These observations is lead researchers to experiment by producing surgical lesions in animals in different regions of the brain to observe what effects these lesions have on behavior (Westen, 1999). Since its origin, one of the major issues faced by biological psychologists was localization of functions. This entails knowing which different parts of the brain control different aspects of functioning. In 1836, a physician named Marc Dax, noted that lesions on the left side of the brain were associated with aphasia or language disorder. Because of this discovery, many other discoveries linking the left hemisphere of the brain with language function appeared (Westen, 1999). These other discoveries led to the finding of Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas. Broca’s aphasia involves difficulty in production of speech, whereas Wernicke’s aphasia involves difficulty in comprehending language (Westen, 1999).            The clinical assumption of Biological psychology is that organisms share similar biological processes and behaviors. Some of the other disciplines in psychology greatly related with biological psychology are comparative psychology, evolutionary psychology, neuropsychology, clinical psychology, cognitive psychology and experimental psychology (Westen, 1999).            Comparative psychology is the study of behavior and mental processes of animals other than human beings (Westen, 1999). Biological psychologists use animals in their experiments. They compare the results done on these animals to human processes and behaviors. Evolutionary psychology, on the other hand, deals with the explanation of mental and psychological traits and how they evolved to adapt to different stimuli. Neuropsychology is an interdisciplinary field of psychology and neuroscience that aims to explain how the structure and function of the brain relate to certain psychological behaviors (â€Å"Evolutionary Psychology†).            Other fields of psychology related with biological psychology such as clinical psychology, cognitive psychology, and experimental psychology are connected with biological psychology because these fields aim to link the physiological processes with different mental processes. Clinical psychology focuses on the nature and treatment of physiological processes that lead to emotional distress. Cognitive psychology examines the nature of thought, memory and language. And, experimental psychology examines mental processes in human and other animals (Westen, 1999). Some of the noted modern biological psychologists are Nikolaas Tinbergen, Karl von Frisch, Eric Kandel and Arvid Carlsson. Nikolaas Tinbergen is a Dutch ornithologist who won the Nobel Prize for Physiology in 1973. His contribution is the organization and elicitation of individual and social behaviour patterns in animals. Karl von Frisch is an Austrian ethologist who won the same award with Tinbergen. He studied the senses of bees and identified they methods of communication(â€Å"Nobel Prize in Physiology/ Medicine 1973†)..Eric Kandel is a neuroscientist whose contribution is the analysis of biochemical changes in neurons assiciated with learning and memory storage. LED 605 Negotiations*, Bargaining and Conflict Resolution*: Jerry Maguire Case Study by Hana Jurcovicova For our case study assignment we watched a short part from Jerry Maguire movie. In this movie Jerry Maguire is a sport agent. This kind of job was always his dream. But he is not happy in his job. He hates himself and what he became. He hates the company that was all about money. He learned when he first started, that the job of a sports agent is mostly about personal relationship, caring for people doing business with and meeting their needs. He writes a new mission statement for his company, for the future of it. He wants to make it a company he would like to work for. He thinks that the most important thing is to have fewer clients, which they can take better care of. Fewer clients mean less money for the company which is oriented mostly in making a lot of money. He writes a little book about this mission statement about what we think but never say loud and put it in every mailbox of every employee. The next day when everybody reads it or is still reading, people are clapping to Jerry Maguire even though they know almost for sure he was going to be fired for that. Jerry Maguire is fired later on in the movie. He is fired for sharing his personal opinion and writing about it. It looks like he wants to set people against the company and the way it operates right now. Moreover he did not discuss this mission statement change with any of the members of the board or CEO. Nobody gave him the permission to release his new mission statement to public.

The Case of Margaret Margaret is a forty-year-old woman, whose husband left her for a younger woman. Margaret has experienced symptoms of shock, rage, and weeping spells. She has been isolating herself in bed because she doesn’t want to deal with anyone or anything. Along with her depressed mood, she has been consuming alcohol in a considerable amount. Margaret’s business has been suffering and she feels like a â€Å"total failure†. Explication of John Donne’s holy sonnet 14 The beauty of John Donne’s holy sonnet 14 is in its language. John Donne is an interesting character who uses metaphors anyhow he pleases and finds a way to make it work. The beginning of the poem depicts a man hopeless without God’s help, a man trying to change his ways but finds no success and asks God to change in a way I find quite terrifying. The use of violent and erotic language (i.e Batter, Force, Labor, Captive; and erotic words: i.e ravish, love, knot etc) set the tone of the sonnet, and it remains constant all through. Before diving into the content of the poem, we look at the form of the poem. This poem has a Petrarchan form, and an Elizabethan structure. I know this because it has 14 lines, the rhymes, and the ending couplet. The poem rhymes like: ABBAABBA – CDCDEE. Also we look at the iambic pentameter. The beginning of the poem looked like it would be in iambic pentameter: Batter my heart, We can see here the poem starts with â€Å"Batter†w hich has a stressed syllable, followed by â€Å"My†which is unstressed, and â€Å"Heart†which is stressed, but then, that’s followed by â€Å"three-personed God†which breaks the iambic pentameter. The same can be seen on Line two. I think the essence of starting a poem this way was to start with an aggressive tone in order to prepare the reader for the story ahead. The artist used a representational approach with different values ranging from white to black. The first thing notice is a how the artist used the young man as the single mass in his painting. This would be considered the focal point of the painting. The tall young man whose face is covered with his hair, it seems as if he is trying to hide his emotions from the world. But with the colorless painting you can tell the mood is onto happy one. Mashes also used a technique which is called linear perspective, more specifically a vanishing point. She had arrived in Thailand and was in this busy city for less than an hour, when she caught a Taxi to a local restaurant, and it was there that she caught a glimpse of the woman who was riding a bike. She chose to make a few changes, making the woman a few years younger and brighten the scene a bit, but this is still pretty close to what was pictured. Iris used the colors trot the standard lour wheel which included the primary colors, secondary colors, cool colors such as red-orange, and warm colors as well. All are just as vibrant from the yellows all the way through to the blues Iris did a fantastic job at using optical color mixture. Prom far away you cannot tell that there are tons Of tiny fingertip dots that are making this painting into one huge picture. She used he process Which is known as pointillism. Pointillism is When an artist Will place many points or dots of pure color side by side. The closer you get then you can see the fingertip dots and how accurately they make up the umbrella, wall, and to the bigger fingertip dots that put the woman together. I think both paintings are very skillful in their own way. Looking at the detail that goes into each painting I would not dare say neither are close to being unskillful. The first painting I viewed which was titled Alone seemed to have been painted based off of his feelings at the time. The painting is on the darker side but even with it Ewing colorless you can still get a great idea of what the sky is supposed to look like and there were clues as to how the weather was on that day. The young man is wearing a sweater, there are many clouds above, and the atmosphere alone seems to be like a storm is approaching soon, If there were not as much details in this painting I would have been left trying to figure out what exactly was going. The second painting is nothing short of spectacular, Based on the backstops that was given, I feel as if I was in Thailand right along with the artist seeing this woman pass me by on the bike. Both artists did their intended job, which was to lull me in and make me feel their painting through my eyes! This alone makes their paintings skillful Like have said before both paintings stood out to me for different reasons, but both are not appealing to me. If I was to purchase a painting I Would not go for the first painting. Would like to see happy, motivating, and colorful art pieces in my home. A good example of this would be the second painting, this art piece was very appealing to me and wouldnt mind staring at it day in and day out. It just puts me in a good place. The first painting Alone is not appealing to me for this reason, it seems to dark and it harbors to any bad and unspoken feelings. This was another assignment enjoyed doing. Before when would look at a piece of artwork never realized what actually went into each masterpiece. Now knowing the different elements of design, how many techniques there are available, and the history alone definitely makes me appreciate an artists work and effort. I will not look at artwork the same anymore! See that it goes deeper than just a picture hanging on the wall.
